Konfirmationen er kirkens ritual, som markerer overgangen mellem barndom og ungdom. Konfirmation er Guds bekræftelse af sit forhold til konfirmanden, det forhold, som blev oprettet i dåben. Konfirmanden gentager dåbens ja med sit ja til den kristne tro og bliver velsignet.
Der er mulighed for at blive konfirmeret både i Sømandskirken i New York og i Washington DC. Det er også muligt at følge Sømandskirkens konfirmationsundervisning her i USA og blive konfirmeret i Danmark.
Undervisning i New York
For at man kan blive konfirmeret i Sømandskirken må man først gå til konfirmationsforberedelse. Til konfirmationsforberedelsen taler vi om tro, om Gud og om andre af livet store spørgsmål. Vi synger salmer, vi hygger os og vi spiser dansk slik. Det er ofte rigtig givende for konfirmanderne at lære andre unge dansk-amerikanere som dem selv at kende.
Konfirmationsforberedelsen foregår i Sømandskirken i New York 1-2 gange om måneden om søndagen i forbindelse med højmessen kl. 11am.
Udover konfirmationsundervisningen om søndagen er der en obligatorisk konfirmandweekend i Sømandskirken. Konfirmandweekenden er lørdag til søndag, hvor konfirmanderne overnatter i Sømandskirken og holder deres egen gudstjeneste søndag, som de har forberedt lørdag. Denne weekend er obligatorisk, fordi Sømandskirken skal leve op til det danske krav om at konfirmanderne skal modtage mellem 48-56 timers konfirmationsundervisning.
Fjernundervisning
Hvis man bor uden for Tri-State-Area kan man modtage konfirmationsundervisning via e-mail. Det er dog stadig obligatorisk at komme til konfirmandweekenden i Sømandskirken i New York (for at konfirmanden kan modtage det krævede antal undervisningstimer)
Tilmelding
Man kan tilmelde sig konfirmationsforberedelse hele året ved at sende en mail til sømandspræst Julie Sløk.
Det koster $300 pr. konfirmand at gå til konfirmationsforberedelse i Sømandskirken.
Første mødegang skal konfirmanden medbringe fødsels- eller dåbsattest samt betaling for konfirmationsundervisningen.
Konfirmationen i 2014 vil ligge på følgende datoer: New York 13. april 2014. Washington, DC 27. april 2014.
Confirmation
Confirmation is the church ritual that marks the transition between childhood and adolescence. Confirmation is God's confirmation of his relationship with the young person, the relationship that was established in the baptism. The confirmand repeats the yes of the baptism with his/hers yes to become part of the Christian faith and will receive the blessing of God. Confirmations are held both in the Danish Seamen's Church in New York and in Washington, D.C. It is also possible to follow the Danish Seamen's Church confirmation lessons here in the U.S. and be confirmed in Denmark.
The lessons in New York
To be confirmed in the Danish Seamen's Church one must first attend the confirmation lessons. In preparation for the confirmation, we talk about faith, about God and more of life's big questions. We sing hymns, we enjoy ourselves and eat Danish candy. At the lessons the confirmands will meet other young danish americans, which often can be very rewarding for all.
Confirmation preparation takes place in the Danish Seamen's Church in New York, 1-2 times a month on Sundays at the normal service at 11am.
In addition to the confirmation lessons on Sundays there is a mandatory confirmand weekend in the Danish Seamen's Church in New York. The confirmand weekend is a Saturday and Sunday, where the young people stay in the Seamen's Church and make their own service on the Sunday, which they have prepared on the Saturday. This weekend is mandatory since the Seamen's Church must live up to the Danish requirement that confirmands should receive between 48-56 hours of confirmation instruction.
Distance Learning
If you live outside the Tri-state Area you can receive confirmation lessons via e-mail. It is still mandatory to attend the confirmand weekend in the Danish Seamen's Church in New York (in order for the confirmand to receive the required amount of lessons)

The cost of attending confirmation classes in the Seamen’s Church is $300.
The first time we meet the confirmand must bring his/hers birth certificate and the payment for the confirmation lessons.
